OMV starting Problem "emergency mode" on every start

  • Since today I tested a 120W power plug.

    OMV Volumes verkleinern/vergrößern

    Without success.

My smart smart plug told me that the NAS‘s power consumption is at 39W. Is that not realistic?

    Coarse estimation: 4x7W + 3W + 20W for the system = 51W?

  • TL;DR

You should try the basics of troubleshooting:

Unplug ALL that you don't need to start the base OS.

Plug only the mainboard, RAM and the OS drive and boot.

Then go step by step until it fails and you'll have a better idea of what is wrong.

About the power you need, sorry but I have to many years of towers with Windows and there was always problems with low power PSUs.

Hence my aw with the PSU you're using

The PSU should be enough, the fact it won't boot doesn't make sense, the only alternative I can think of to try is an option previously suggested, create an install usb as you don't have the original. Shutdown the machine plug it in and see if boots and you get a login prompt, if you do login as root and run the update-grub option, shutdown, remove the installer usb and restart.

If it starts from the installer usb then switch off and remove the installer usb.

  • Ok, then I try first the usb boot drive. This install usb I can set up like I did to install Debian like TDL told in his video (post 17)?

  • A never ending story...

In the night the machine turns off automatically and starts again in the morning (using wakealarm).

The following screen was in the morning

But the plex counter is working correct.

I do not understand the things happen here.

    Neither do I

I have seen this more than once on here and I always wonder why, my server is on, being a HP Microserver it has 150W power supply, but unless the drives are constantly being accessed which they are not the server is virtually idle.

So why don't I power down, spin down drives or hibernate etc. because it adds unnecessary wear and tear on the server and the drives. The system will only call for power from the psu when it needs, it doesn't run at 150W constantly. We don't turn off our fridge or freezer, TV's, SAT boxes go into standby when we turn them off.

Other than re accessing what you're doing and reinstalling I don't know what else to suggest, you can get over one hurdle only to find another.

BTW that error usually suggests there is an issue with the drives, but all of them, just doesn't make sense.

  • Yes I use suspend to safe the hard drives and my electric meter.

I made a new bootable usb drive (like TDL in the video) with an up-to-date Debian.

    Now i do the following:

    - plug in this usb drive to my NAS

    - reboot the NAS

    - boot from this usb drive

    - enter the CLI (not installing something) (how do I this?)

    - type 'update-grub'

    - finally reboot the NAS and

    - booting again from my USB system drive

    boot from this usb drive

No, allow the system to boot from your current drive, if there is an issue with grub it will detect the install usb and continue with boot, if this works you should be greeted with a login, it not, then this approach will not resolve it.

  • Hmmm I’m not sure if I did it the right way.

    - Plugged in the usb drive

    - rebooted

    - checked the uefi if the system drive is active (by the way: here I cannot select something other than the system drive, looks like post 51)

    - booted from the system drive (to the CLI)

    - logged me in and entered the update-grub command

    - rebooted

NAS still boots in emergency mode 😓

My plex server is running and I can stream my multimedia files and the SMB share is available all over my clients...

spare drive is another system drive?

E.g. I buy another system drive,

Due to the errors with the emergency mode, all I am suggesting is to test with another drive connected to that USB to SATA or a USB flash drive and use OMV's ISO, no Debian.

This is up to you, you don't have to do it, but if you get the same emergency mode error then perhaps it's related to a setting within the m'board bios. This is something I would attempt to try and locate the problem, but as to the other ata error, that might be related to not using an atx power supply, but I'm not convinced.

  • I found the following in the OMV GUI

  • May I ask in regard to post #65: Are the 4 drives attached to a PCIe card or to the internal connectors on the mainboard?

I am asking because I had this error messages with a PCIe-SATA-adapter. When I switched it to another PCIe-slot everything was fine.

  • new4u all 4 data drives are connected to the motherboard directly.

I also removed the sata card with the system drive to connect it to a (back)usb 3 (cause some guys mentioned that could be a problem with the sata card)
