I agree with you about the scans on Jellyfin. I too had super slow scans setting it up. I was already using Plex so I didn’t care and just left it running to do its thing, and came back several days later to find it delivering media adequately. It just wasn’t as slick of a package as Plex so I never use it, although I do still have the container on my server but not running. I never tried Emby. Plex has never given me a reason to search for more.
I have a domain name, do I need to do anything special at setup?

My issue with Plex (and this was a long time ago).. was I just did't care much for the App on my Shield. Honestly, I don't like Emby very much here either.. thus why at home, I just point Kodi at some shares, scan it, and that's that. I only use Emby when I'm away from the house. It's always worked well for me. Plex and Emby seem comparable enough that I think it will just come down to preference between the two, and I don't really think there's a wrong answer.
Edit: Oh and for grins, I just checked as it's coming up on 2hrs... It's picked up a little speed and I'm at 121

I'm about 10min shy of 3hrs, and it's at 178. Now I'm starting to feel like Forrest Gump at this point.. ("Gone this far, might as well just keep on going") I can't imagine if I added my TV folder... It's a little larger in size, but has a lot more files scan.
Now that I am doing this side by side I feel kinda vindicated..lol
-
Just hit 4hrs, 229 scanned. The interesting thing is, unlike Plex and Emby, just a brief glance only one or two look like they aren't scanning in properly.
-
I don't understand, why couldn't you let it scan overnight and not care? Or does it have to be scanned often?

Well, when you add new media, it has to be scanned. If I just add one or two movies? Probably not a real issue waiting 10min or so for it to scan those two files.
If I add a new TV series, w/ maybe multiple seasons and episodes. You're probably talking about significantly longer.
and for what it's worth. I'm about 10min shy of 5hrs, and it's at 270. I suspect this is going to be close to 7hrs by the time it scans everything.

By the way, 2305... About 6hrs 15min I'm at 312. It's got about 30 to go.. it might make 7hrs (I was figuring about 7.5)

It’s funny, sometimes, how threads evolve/devolve. And others are just 1, 2, 3, done.

I like this thread best.

It’s not a bad thread.

I was just about to post, it just finished..lol. 2335. So about 6hrs, 45min... for about 350 files. Looking through there's about 20 or so that didn't scan properly, but I'm not going to mess w/ that. I think my point has been made. I'm actually interested to see what Chipwingg experience will be when he imports his music collection (I'm assuming it's pretty large).
It's just weird I have zero issues w/ Emby, and this always happens with Jellyfin

My collection isn’t huge yet. I have never had a server before, so it’s scattered around between a 2011 MacBook, my main laptop, my desktop pc, and my phone. If I had to estimate, all together my songs would equal ~10gb? Once my server is up I hope that it can grow to replace Spotify because it will be in a central location and easy to access (and hopefully easy to add to).
-
Also, I have mostly downloaded lower quality MP3’s to save space. With 4tb, that will be not as big a concern.
But I do have a question about ssd vs hdd storage- should I store my music on part of my little ssd and the movies on the hdd zfs pool? Or will everything be good on the hdds?

Oh I was figuring a huge music colleciton... I have about 12-13gigs myself and consider that pretty small..lol
-
Oh yeah I know mine is small. But I still use Spotify (not normally of course, I don’t get ads) a lot, and I want to replace it. Even if I have to manually download songs.
