Is this sff pc ideal for my Nas project

Hi,

Currently I am deciding if buy a Synology ds220+ Nas or make my own.

So, my first requirement is to achieve the similar features found in Synology.

I found this small form factor PC and for the price I think worth the money.

The PC support two bays for 3.5 HDD, also has 1 bay for 2.5hdd and 1 bay for optical unit. I am not sure if it has gigabit ethernet.

In my opinion, it has for far much better hardware than Synology. And with open media vault I think will allow me to create a better device than Synology.

However, I would like to read the opinions of veteran in the forum, related if it is a smart decision or maybe there is a better option.

I guess it all depends on your needs. You haven't said what you're going to do with the NAS. But for that money it seems like a good buy.

Of course if you are going to compare it with the Synology ds220+ I would not think so. Do it yourself. Commercial systems are closed and limited, I had Synology for years until I discovered OMV, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Are you sure it has 2 bays of 3.5" and one of 2.5"? It does not appear on the HP website...

Related to processor, I just wish make a underclock to the processor in order to save energy and límite the frequency which for my purpose is overkiller.

I also planning to buy two hard drivers Toshiba with Nas firmware and 256mb cache for sensitive data like photos or videos. So raid configuration is a must. And also a 2.5 HDD 5tb for multimedia stuffs which can be lost without regrets if something goes wrong.

Yes, it has 4 sata ports, but it seems to me that the box only supports a single 3.5" drive. See page 36 and later.

That's a good idea. In the future you can undo it if you need more power.

Cheaper and smaller. Has a PCIe inside. Only one 3.5 hdd unless you remove the CD drive.

It is important to know what you need the NAS for. The power consumption of the computers suggested here (i5-6500 power loss (TDP) 65 watts, E3-1225 TDP 95 watts, G3240 TDP 53 watts) would be too high for me personally. These computers often have power supplies with efficiencies of < 80%. Over time, a lot of electricity costs add up. I would prefer a computer with an N or J processor (TDP 6 watts or 10 watts). The Synology D220+ has a J4025 processor. He has little power. The performance is sufficient for transfer, photo management or Plex.

In a 800G3 the main hard drive is an M.2, you can use two 3.5 drives, and if you want you can remove DVD and put a 2.5 SSD.
