OpenMediaVault backup (6.1.1)

  • Hello,

First of all, a question: what is the difference between the OpenMediaVault backup (6.1.1):

    - dd

    - dd full disk

    ??

Will the image here also be reduced accordingly by the unused space?

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything sensible on Google about dd vs dd full disk or about the reduction.

Now that I've got the OMV so far, I want everything to basically work, which I want, of course, to secure this work.

According to my Google research, the best and easiest way to back up the system and configuration is the openmediavault-backup (6.1.1) plugin. Here I would set the backup depth to 7 days. So 6 days are dug out. And stored in a shared folder called Backup.

Is there the possibility of making an intelligent backup like with “raspiBackup - Intelligent rotation strategy”?

    1) Backups of the current day and the last 6 days

    2) Backups of the current week and the last 3 weeks

    3) Backups of the current month and the last 11 months

    4) Backup of the current year and the last 2 years

Since there is no conflict between the solution and what I have in mind for the future, here is an outlook:

As a medium-term solution, I would like to save the backups (OS) and the data (shared folders) to an external hard drive using “USB backup”.

But since you have to think about it here, this solution is only good to a limited extent.

As a long-term solution, I would like to use an external server on which the backups are stored via network sharing or wireguard VPN.

Be aware that the backup plugin will make a backup of your OS, not of your data.

dd will do only a backup of the OS filesystem

dd_full will do a backup of the complete OS drive/sd card --> use this, it is easier to restore; make sure to test the restore process

    It will be compressed.

Nope. You would have to write your own script to do this. But why do you need so many backups of your OS? You could just trigger a backup before and after you made significant changes to your system.

If you make no changes to your system yourself, you can just restore a rather old backup if needed and upgrade to the latest.

However this also depends on what you have stored on your OS disk. Only the OS or also data or docker.

  • Thank You.

i have striktly saperatet OS and Data like Docker. (if i have done all right ;) )

i have now tested the Backup it takes round 5Hours and now i will lock forward how i can check it

Yes the Intelligent rotation strategy makes more sense for DATA

So i think i will look forward to find a rotation strategy for the server based Backup in the long therm solution

In my opinion, the OS does not need daily, weekly, monthly, yearly backups. Your data does. You just need to be able to find a working OS backup. It is doubtful you would ever need to go back a year for the OS. If you want that many backups, I would use borgbackup in the backup plugin and keep 365 days or something. It might seem like a lot but borg dedupes and compresses. So, that many backups wouldn't use much space.
