Beginner - How to copy existing data from a USB drive via RSYNC or USB Backup Plug In

Hi,

I just started configuring my own NAS , using OMV 7.2.1-1 (Sandworm) with one system drive and an extra drive for my data. I found several very helpful tutorials on the general setup and so far I managed to set it up.

Now, I would like to copy / transfer my existing data from a USB drive (used as a cold backup, formatted in NTFS) or from a QNAP NAS which is in the same local network.

I did not find a guide / tutorial how to do this , so I would like to ask for some help..

My first idea : simply copying from the USB drive .. However, my current USB drive is formatted in NTFS , so I guess it cannot be mounted.

I could make a new backup with an EXT4 formatted disk, but how would I need to mount this disk to my OMV NAS in order to transfer the data to the internal drive?

My second idea : using RSync , to pull the data from my QNAP NAS in the same network... However, I have not managed to enable RSync on my QNAP NAS yet , so again , any help here would be greatly appreciated

Hi, thanks for your response! I'm not quite sure if I understand you correctly.

I guess I can access the data on the Qnap NAS via SMB.

What do I need to do on my OMV NAS with RSYNC ?

You can mount a NYFS file system on OMV to copy data. Simply unmount that filesystem later when you're done transferring data. Don't use an NTFS drive to permanently configure services.

ok, this sound great. I gave it a try, connected my (NTFS formatted) USB backup drive to my machine , but I was not able to mount it (it did not show the usb drive under storage or file systems) , how do I have to do this?

And what would be the recommended way to copy the data from the USB drive to my internal OMV data drive once it's mounted?

Yes, this is exactly what I tried, but it does not show my USB - HDD . Neither my NTFS formatted USB HDD with my data on it , nor a freshly formatted EXT4 USB HDD. Am I doing something wrong / missing a configuration step to make USB drives usable in OMV?

I gave it a try , but I was not able to connect to my server using the Remote Mount plugin.

it seems that the [SWAP] mount option does not show up on my OMV .

I am using a virutalized OMV as a VM on proxmox - might have done something wrong when setting up the VM so it does not show me the [SWAP] drives ? Do I have to add a drive in the VM on proxmox first ?

Yes, you were right, it was neccessary to setup the usb passthrough in proxmox to the OMV-VM. For all other interested readers, here's a helpful tutorial how to do this:

Now I could see and mount my EXT4 USB HDD, and I transferred some test data from my QNAP NAS to this EXT4 USB HDD - but I did not manage to copy data from it on my OMV NAS with R-Sync. Is there a guide / advice you could give me here?

I also tried to mount my NTFS formatted USB HDD, it did show up, but only with a small partition of the drive, and I was also unable to transfer/copy data over to my OMV NAS.
