Many years ago my son set up for me one of the HP Proliant microservers running OMV version 0.4.38 Fedaykin. As well as the drive for the operating system this has three 2Tb hard drives set up in some sort of RAID array. This has run 100% reliably until now.
I have used it for three main purposes, a receptacle for my PC backups, a store for my media files and as the data storage for all my correspondence, spreadsheets, family photos etc. Each task has its own sub directory. Although it appears to be working and I can still access the web admin interface, when it comes to my PC it reports that it is unable to connect my network drive. Looking on File Explorer, although the D drive cannot be opened, I can see Openmediavault and its top sub directory (Storage) in the Network section.
From a mobile device using VLC I can browse folders and see media files but not play them.
Unfortunately my son is not able to help me with this any time soon. Is there anything I can do, given my complete lack of knowledge of how OMV works, to restore the situation bearing in mind I do not want to do anything to risk losing the files on the server?
OMV 0.4.38 Fedaykin problem

So the server is now up and running for about 6 years.
Do you know somebody with some Linux knowledge?
-
Yes, it has run faultlessly for around 6 years. My son has (or had) some Linux knowledge but is currently unable to help.

Are you accessing OMV from Windows?
I would probably try to backup the data to an external drive and then try to install the latest version of OMV which is OMV4 for now.
How long was the server running per week/month on average?
-
Yes, I am accessing OMV from my Windows 7 PC. Although I can see the server and its top level partition there are three subdivisions I cannot see from the PC, so would not be able to backup the data to another drive.
I have had the server running 24/7 with a weekly reboot for the best part of 7 years! Is there another way I could access the data? And would my old hardware be up to running OMV4 (it has 8mb of RAM)?
Thanks for helping out.

so would not be able to backup the data to another drive.
I installed OMV 0.4 in a virtual machine. OMV 0.4 already has the USB backup plugin. So it would be possible to use the plugin to backup the data to a drive which is attached by USB.
Unfortunately it is not possible to create a NTFS filesystem with OMV 0.4. We could try if OMV recognizes an NTFS filesystem if it is already on the drive.I have had the server running 24/7 with a weekly reboot for the best part of 7 years!
That is a lot. The risk that one of the drives has problems is quite big.
And would my old hardware be up to running OMV4 (it has 8mb of RAM)?
RAM is more than enough for OMV4.
Can you post some screenshots from the GUI of OMV? Below storage there is
- Physical Disks
- RAID Management
- Filesystems
- S.M.A.R.T
Pictures from each of them would be helpful.
-
BTW, if somebody else has a good idea, please chime in
@geaves
@crashtestMaybe check if SMB1 is enabled on the client.
-
I'll organise the screenshots, here's a test showing what happens when I click on "Plugins"
-
So you have also Logical Volume Management and Greyhole. Post those two as well.
-
Here are the images you mentioned
-
Here are the other two
-
Strange. Filesystem is missing. Greyhole is not enabled. Logical Volume Manager is empty. Do the other two Sheet in Logical Volume Manager show something?
-
I've just noticed your comment re SMB1 but don't know how to check I'm afraid.
-
No, the other tabs in Logical Volume Manager are empty too. Could this be as a result of whatever has gone wrong?
-
At the moment it seems like no filesystem is available. Then the SMB version does not matter.
-
Are you able to access the CLI or terminal? Maybe with a keyboard and monitor connected to the server?
And maybe you can post the syslog. In Diagnostics >> System Logs >> Logs
select syslog and press download. Then you can upload the file here. -
I have never attached a keyboard or monitor but have one of each kicking around.
Here is the syslog

This is an old version of OMV that I have never used, but looking at some of the screenshots and the fact this machine is restarted weekly, best guess would be it's running a Raid5 with LVM, LVM would in theory make is easier for an end user. There is a high probability the Raid has returned as inactive during a reboot.
Also we have no idea if the hardware raid controller has been used and therefore LVM was installed to sit on top. Best option is to shutdown the server and wait for help, I personally would not want to suggest anything unless I was sitting in front of it. The system has 3 x 2Tb hard drives so one would need a minimum 4Tb external hard drive to back the data up to if it's running a Raid5. -
Thanks geaves, I'll order myself a large external HDD!
-
I have to admit that I have no idea how to move forward systematically. The missing filesystem in combination with Greyhole, LVM and HP Microserver ...
