Upgrade to Kernel 5.3?

I saw that Kernel 5.3 was released and had significant improvements to SMB performance which I would like to benefit from.

My system is:
Version: 4.1.26-1 Arrakis
Kernel: Linux 4.17.0-0.bpo.1-amd64

Would following this guide to compile and install Kernel 5.3 on debian work with OpenMediaVault?

How do you know it. I've installed OMV v5 (over Debian 10) and it uses kernel 4.19. I haven't seen a kernel above 4.9.

Proxmox 6(and it's repo) uses kernel 5.0

Thanks, but maybe a stupid question. Why do someone need Proxmox? As I understand is a virtualization software (like VMware) and you can run several different systems at the same time.
In my case I just need one system (OMV) and want to benefit from the power of the hardware. That's why I install direct (Debian with OMV) on the PC. And therefore Debian 10 still uses the 4.19 kernel.

Or do I miss something in my thinking?

Proxmox kernel has some additional drivers,and underneath it uses ubuntu kernel,which has built-in zfs drivers. They usually fix faster some bugs and errors inside it, so that is also a plus.

Just to understand. Does that mean that Proxmox overwrite the kernel installed by Debian/OMV?

No,it only installs them,and sets them as default.

On the other hand,you can always download latest ubuntu kernel:
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.3.1/

You're right. I had an error in my thinking Normally the kernel exists side by side.

Is is this just not compatible because I have virtualbox? Or is there an update I need to do for virtualbox first?

Not sure how to apply it though

From my understanding this patch is also included in the latest test builds: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds
Would these be safe to install? I remember it was a hassle installing virtualbox in OMV in the first place,although that was over a year ago.

You can also use script for kernel update:

UKUU is great for GUI systems,but for OMV uou can use ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh
