As soon as I reboot the unit the error started.
If I reinstall will I loose all of the files already loaded to the hard drive?
Your /etc/openmediavault/config.xml database is corrupt. Try to restore a backup with omv-firstaid and the menu option 'Restore configuration backup'.
Is there another method to get to the root? I never setup SSH and I have tried everything to figure out what might be the root password. Is there a method by which to read the SD directly and be able to modify it?

No, data on your data drive will be safe. Only data on your SD card will be lost.
When setting up the new system you need to point the shared folders to the existing folders on your SD card hard drive.

Boot a life linux distro on a laptop or desktop. Than you can edit the SD card.

On the SD card or on the data drive?

Boot the system with the monitor and keyboard connected and log in normally as a user.
On the SD card or on the data drive?
data drive
Thanks, I updated the original post.
Thank You for all of your help. I ended up creating a new SD card with a fresh install and re-assigned hard drive pointers to the existing folders. Everything is working now.
Another question, I enable SSH but did not see any place to specify the root password. Am I missing something?
I installed OMV 4. I set it up and turned on SSH but no where does it ask for root password to set. This is the ISO I installed "OMV_4_Odriod_XU$_HC1_HC2"
If you are using the default HC1/HC1 image from SourceForge, then there is no root password set. And no root password needed. I don't have a root password set on any of my OMV devices.
Instead you are supposed to create a user that is member of the sudo and ssh groups. Then you can login as that user (possibly using ssh) and use sudo to execute commands as root.
Thank You for the clarification. That worked.
