Which partitions for system disk in Debian 10

  • I want to make a NAS with 4 HDD for data and one SSD for system disk, cache and other useful files (no user data) .

    I will use Debian 10.

Have you some advice for the partitions?

    Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • I think you need to elaborate on your question.

HDD or SSD? Are you asking for filesystem to use or number of partitions to create?

At the beginning, a USB stick was used for OMV and you let the installer do everything.

Now the smallest SSD I find out there is a 500GB and it is too much to use only for OMV.

If the Development Team doesn't think about partitioning the SSD the right way, I have to install Debian and install OMV above.

But is there a "smart" way to partition the disk?

I have to increase VAR? HOME? A new partition?

Because if OMV occupies a maximum of 64GB, I would like to dedicate the remaining 400GB to something else that can be used as a support disk, for example for ISO.

Thanks in advance for your help.

At least in Germany I find lots of ~120GB SSD for around €25,- (Sandisk)

I would create one partition for OMV (~8 GB should be plenty if you put Docker somewhere else). Depending of your RAM maybe an additional swap partition. An then one for general use.

In OMV there is now also a plugin which allows you to create shared folder on the OS partition. So you could as well use the standard ISO.

With the release of the sharerootfs plugin, there is no reason you need to partition the OS disk. You can use the OS disk for all things OMV.

    omv 7.0.5-1 sandworm | 64 bit | 6.8 proxmox kernel

    plugins :: omvextrasorg 7.0 | kvm 7.0.13 | compose 7.1.6 | k8s 7.1.0-3 | cputemp 7.0.1 | mergerfs 7.0.4

omv-extras.org plugins source code and issue tracker - github - changelogs

    Great!

So I do a normal installation and OMV takes the whole disk.

Then, after installing the plugin, what should I do? How does it work?

It allows you to create shared folders on the OS drive. So, you should be able to use the OS drive for most plugins.
