I am logged in as admin.
Where are you logged in as admin?
The admin user is only for the GUI of OMV

Yes - I should have said - the GUI says I am logged in as admin.
I still cannot drag a file to the directory
This is on finder, right? As which user did you connect in finder (via smb I assume)?
I am just logged in to my mac. In Finder under Network I can see my Raspberry Pi (NAS) as NAS - SMB/CIFS and I am connected to it has guest.
To add I can use Cyberduck and see the RPi and the folders via SFTP. There if I check permissions it's 755 for owner, group and others. It won't let me change them of course!
Maybe it helps if you post a screenshot of the settings from the smb share.
Does everything work on a newly created shared folder shared via smb?
Mhm, looks correct.
Can you show ownership and permissions of this folder and the of the files on file system?
With ls -l from CLI. Please post in a code box </>
ls -al

This is the folder called General that was part of the initial omv setup.
And you tried the resetperms plugin to reset permissions on this folder with the error messages mentioned above?
Yes on this folder.
Have you tried shared folder permissions changes in the GUI?
(Maybe I missed it but it seems as if you were changing permissions on the CLI.)
Yes I set pi user and pi group to read/write.
Have you set "others" to read/write ?
BTW: Owner really should be root and there shouldn't be any boxes checked at the top, above Owner, Group and Others.
Sorry not sure what you mean. I have only seen Others on my macbook app Cyberduck when I open the OMV folders with SFTP. In Cyberduck there are no groups above Owner.
It is odd - I checked smb.conf for the folder General and it says directory mask is 775, yet Cyberduck says 755.
Certainly I cannot write to the folder, I can drag files from it. So 755 makes more sense. Yet the smb.conf says it's 775?
Doesn't a "guest only" share default to "read-only" access? You'll actually connect to OMV as the "nobody" account which is not part of the "user" group and hence whether folder perms are 755 or 775 you get read-only access.
You can always check which account has connected to a OMV SMB/CIFS share using the Diagnostics | Services | SMB/CIFS tab.
The fundamental question asked by macom at #2 above - What is the target for the log file? - was never answered.
From subsequent question & answer it looks like you never created any "user" accounts on OMV via "User Management" until a day or two ago. You don't seem to have managed to use the resetperms plugin correctly to change owner/group from "root:root" to "root:users" in order to make effective use of any new created OMV user account and create a private share that requires a user name/password combo to connect to an appropriate SMB/CIFS share.
When using the resetperms plugin - you select the folder you want, then the perms you want, then hit the save button and then hit "Reset Permissions".
Doesn't a "guest only" share default to "read-only" access?
Do not think so, I do have a "guest only" share to allow everybody on the network to store data on that share for exchange.
Thanks. You are right in Diagnostic Serivices SMB I am connected as nobody in nogroup. But if I flip to guest ok it's still the same nobody nogroup.. Then I tried No and still the diagnostic says nobody nogroup! Do I have to reboot to get these changes to show up? I was not rebooting between the changes.
What does this mean? I am lost! Thanks again.
Update - if I check diagnostics services ssh I am connected as user pi. But if I log in with Cyberduck using ssh and get to the folders. I still have no write access to them. User pi seems to be corrupted?

The share config WebUI page says this in small print under the option where you select "guest ok" or "guest only" or "no" :
If 'Guests allowed' is selected and no login credential is provided, then access as guest. Always access as guest when 'Guests only' is selecting; in this case no password is required to connect to the share. Make sure that the guest user nobody can access the files.
Now when you swap from "guest" to "no" and save & apply the changes, it's best to disconnect from the share, then reload the diagnostic data to show there are no old connections, then re-connect to the share in order to be sure you're using the updated smb config and view the correct connection info in OMV. If your share is not public you should be prompted for user credentials.
Okay thanks, I disconnected, cleared my browser cache and on reconnection (with Public no still) it says nobody nogroup. If I use Finder and connect via smb then I see the usual set of folders however General (the public no folder) cannot be opened - I get the error this can not longer be found. Which makes sense if I am connected as nobody. If I use Cyberduck to connect via smb then with my admin password General is still missing because diagnostics say smb is nobody nogroup. So even admin seems not to be working properly.
Can I create a new user with enough permissions to reset these folders?
Thanks a lot for everyone's help - much appreciated. It's 18:30 now in the UK - I can check posts later tonight and tomorrow morning. Thanks again!
