Looking for a new NAS hard drive?

Wow. I'm using solely the ST4000DM000's.
Thankfully I can report that I have had no issues with them so far... That said I'll probably have one fail this evening now
I think that Seagate must have had a dodgy batch, because some people seem to report flawless results from them and others report issues. I think one of the issues is that earlier firmwares were WAY too keen to sleep the drive causing constant start/stop cycling - this is obviously easily fixed. I don't have any of mine set to sleep which I have always found is so much better for the drive.
Cooling may also be an issue for them. There is a variance of about 5-7C between the entire array, but nothing that stands out as alarming. I suppose they cost me much less than some of those HGSTs so what will be will be

I have been using HGSTs for over 5 years now. They have been good drives if they arrive in working order. But always a premium for them. I will use whatever drive is most reliable.

Stay away from Seagate, and WD 3TB Red, they're unreliable.
One of my WD3TB is bad, and has been replaced twice.
I'm thinking get HGST (own by WD) or Hitachi in the future. -
I don't think it's fair to say all of one manufacturer are unreliable. Seagate are my go to brand and I have been using them for spindle drives for over a decade. I have seen far more WD failures by a long shot (and Hitachi, remember deathstars?) - but depending on who you talk to, you'll get the same story with different preferred manufacturers. I think it's a case of every model is different and YMMV. Seagates and WD 3TBs can't be awful, backblaze certainly bought a few of them...

Maybe you're lucky with Seagate drives.
From my experience and others, Seagate is always the worst than other brand that I know. -
That's exactly what I just said - everyone's mileage varies. By the way, HGST and Hitachi are the same. HGST is Hitachi Global Storage Tech.

I read their 2015 reliability review (https://www.backblaze.com/blog…rive-reliability-q4-2015/) - which was in Feb this year - and that's why I bought Seagate drives to replace my (full, not failed) WD Green drives.
It's interesting to see this year's review shows that there are more Seagate failures, but reviewing last year's review shows a breakdown of failure rates per drive capacity.
It's also interesting to read about how they detect future failures with some specific SMART stats (of which, one of my WD Green's is showing "impending doom" )
There's nothing better than a large company like that producing those real world stats...

Hitachi, remember deathstars?
In HGST's defense, the original deathstars were IBM which sold their storage division to HGST I had a few of them. -
Very true. that probably wasn't entirely fair of me.

I still don't think I could buy something called a DeskStar because of it though
-
I'm thinking to buy one of this in the future: http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Des…&sr=8-1&keywords=hgst+4tb
-
The 0.0% fail rate on 4TB is apparently at very good price at amazon. The hms5c4040ble640, this is probably going up on price in the new few days
-
Cheapest in the UK for those by far is Scan: https://www.scan.co.uk/product…ache-coolspin-5700rpm-ncq
-
I like to use pcpartpicker to see the price trends, but it looks like they don't have any data for the HGSTs.
Mind you, the WD Red 4TB has a slight downward activity, which implies that those suppliers haven't tried to monetise on this report (yet)

Yeah PC part picker is great. I also use PriceSpy.co.uk. I stick to the cheapest of the well known reputable retailers though. Some of the companies that price spy list are not worth the hassle, or when you click through there's £20 delivery on top!
