Hello,
Does someone run OMV from an USB Key (4 or 8 GB) plugged on a computer/server?
Is it possible?... and if this is the case, is this a good solution or not recommended?
Thanks,
Chris

It works but the key will not last long (days or weeks in a lot of cases). You can use a usb hard drive or ssd. I recommend 2.5" laptop hard drives.

Yup, 2.5" laptop drives on Ebay are almost as cheap as 4-8gig flash drives. Just find the smallest/cheapest one you can then just toss it in a cheap enclosure and you're done.
I prefer small SSD.
Zitat von "tekkbebe"I prefer small SSD.
These days I would prefer them too.

Indeed, 32GB SSDs are about $40 these days.

Yeah, SSD's are nice.. but many of the smaller/cheaper SSD's, don't have trim support... which if I understand it correctly.. almost puts you in the same position as flash drives with the writing issues (granted, they'll probably last longer than a flash drive).
So I can spend $35-$45 for a SSD that could cause an issue, or spend $30 for a drive that is most likely going to last a while. SSD's with trim support that I've researched, have been at a minimum $80-$90 Looking on Ebay at the moment, I see new, 80gig Hitachi Travelstars and Seagate's for $30, both with free shipping. Just seems silly to waste an SSD on the OS drive... Yeah, they boot faster, but since we're talking a NAS, we're not talking a machine that's gonna be booted multiple times a day (in many cases, they might be booted less than 1x a week)
However, either are better choices than a USB flash drive.
Looks like my 4 GB USB thumb drive is the Chuck Norris of thumb drives. It's been running OMV for over one year now, almost 24/7! I was planning to wipe everything and do a fresh install from 0.4 to 0.5 when it burned out, but it just won't die...
What kind of thumb drive?
A micro flash drive from Verbatim: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Verba…Flash-Drive/dp/B001QFAR3S
I would say you are very lucky
Maybe it is just cold where you live..... to cold for it to fry.
PS- Sux about Horgmo.
That might actually be the answer
Yeah, probably no medals for him now...
Call it luck or whatever, but I've been running ubuntu minimal server install 12.04 LTS for over two years. Before the upgrade I was running 11.04 off a Sandisk Cruzer Professional 8gb key. Still running strong 24/7/365.

Also use this running OMV for a pogoplug for over a year too.
For $7 shipped I guess I'll press my luck...
Ubuntu server doesn't have as many writes because it doesn't normally run collectd or log so much data like OMV. I would still say you got a very good usb drive.
Maybe someone coulld build a "live CD" version of OMV. It could run from ram like most live things do and only write changes to the usb. Ram is cheap these days and that would use even less power. I saw something on clonezillas site about building your own live cd. But I don't have time to deal with it.
Interesting post to cut down writes. http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=16450
I'm using successfully https://www.debian-administrat…/661/A_transient_/var/log for long time and collectd mounted as tmpfs, but maybe flashybrid package would be better http://www.spinifex.com.au/plugs/flashybrid.html
This is never going to be recommended. In beginning of OMV we had way to many issues with people using flash memory. It wastes a lot of time where the mods could be helping people with other issues.
Case in point...
