OK, in germany providers usually don't rederict you and personally I use opnsense as gateway and all networking stuff, but this would be over top top to recommend here given the level of questions we get here.

I agree. Just trying to point out that recommending cloudflare isn't necessarily worse than using your router (at least in some places). This also avoids having to figure out the router's IP address for those clients that don't have it in resolv.conf.

Let's agree to disagree on that. If your router is not working, you will get into trouble sooner or later. It is not only OMV behind it, but quite some devices.

systemctl enable systemd-resolved.service
systemctl start systemd-resolved.service
then use omv-firstaid or the GUI to configure the network interface

Now it works! Thank you again!

This should now be a persistent setup and hopefully avoids future issues with DNS.

Thank you very much for all the support!

Why is everyone here recommending the google nameservers and not the router of the local network?
I do not use the DNS of my router because in my router I have configured DNS with parental control for all the devices that request the DNS from the router. All the devices on my LAN (the ones my kids use) use those DNS. Therefore I configure my PC and my server with alternative DNS.
I do not like google for the same reason that has already been said, it collects too much information. So I use Cloudflare for my PC and my server individually. I could actually configure my ISP's DNS on my PC, but I don't because 1.1.1.1 is easier to remember.

How old are the kids? You should block Port 53 outgoing in the firewall, if they are in school already

My children only know that a port is where ships dock. And they don't know what a DNS is.
DNS is just one more support for the control system. I have a parental control program in the router, with individual control per device (content filters and personalized schedules), and each of its devices is also controlled by google (family link) or microsoft (Microsoft family). I think they have no escape.
