HP Proliant Mikroserver Gen 8 (celeron) & Omv 5

  • After many up`s and downs i have decided this time to stay subborn an go till the and...

Many times with differen versions of v5 did not succeded to install becouse durring install could not update Debian via

many and different servers from many fifferent countrys.

Reason: no connetion with a server or badly status of it or on the and problem with network. And if i go further till the and,

Omv is unstable, icons overlarge and some network-update,login isues.

Than i went back...to make long story short, in this case to v4.1.3 went without any problems.

Before that was on v.3 for more than 4 years.

Now i found and followed an install step by step guide from following link:

RE: there are too many (primary) partitions in the partition table

    https://wiki.omv-extras.org/do…lling_omv5_i386_32_bit_pc

First went with i386 (becouse of celeron cpu knowing this is for 32bit) and last time with amd64 netinstall image.

In aftermath, installing Debian went without a hitch, espacialy ftp update, no problem at all while on debian+omv with blank hdd get message of double kernel and reseting a

HP to go further with format of hdd.

Problem begins with restart and first bootup!!!

And it ends with following fotos going in circle

Any idea how to resolve the problem?

I'm pretty sure that Celeron is 64bit, so kind of a waste of time to use 32bit. Not to mention if you use docker (can 32bit even run docker?).. 99% of containers do not have a 32bit version, but have 64bit... so I probably wouldn't have even wasted my time w/ 32bit (assuming the processor is 64bit)

But beyond that.. What is your boot media? Did you have multiple hard drives connected during your install? To echo what was said above, what is your boot order in your BIOS?

    Wel kind of...

I was thinking first that i386 is just for Intel and AMD64 just for amd.

    But later i understud...

NO, no other connected hddrives. I new that from before.

So the error lies not there.

My boot media is 2.5inch hdd on 5th(ODD)sata.

    Server is in ahci-headless mode.

Boot in bios even with omv v3 and v4 was

    1.usb

    2.hdd

    3. etc.

    And worked wery wel.

I did change hdd to first place and did not helped.

I wonder if someone have a Gen 8 to LOOK UP in bios how order should be.

In general on base of v3 and v4 there should be no difference?!

Or is it needed to make a fuss again with a grub???

During install i followed all steps as on a page.

    Grub install on hdd.

  • Do you want to boot from USB, internal USB/SD card or ssd?

If you got help in the forum and want to give something back to the project click here (omv) or here (scroll down) (plugins) and write up your solution for others.

  • What choice do i have?

    Aim/goal was from ssd.

And if is it still possible i would stay with that option.

If i need sd/usb as no other option,

i would try that one to.

  • The best way is to boot from the internal USB DriveKey. Thats what I do (with ESXi, but that does not matter).

Do you use the internal Controller in AHCI mode or a separate HBA?

If you got help in the forum and want to give something back to the project click here (omv) or here (scroll down) (plugins) and write up your solution for others.

  • With AHCI mode it will allways boot from the first drive bay, so you are out of luck with the idea to boot from ssd. You can set the controller into RAID mode, create RAID 0 with only one device and then you are free to boot from the fith sata port.

The other way is to put a bootloader onto the internal USB drive bay and make this boot fro mthe SSD, Google for a tutorial.

I really recommend booting from the internal USB drive, which gives you 5 seperat data disks. google for tutorial

HBA = host bus adaper, a seperate controller card. I have an LSI208 flashed to IT-mode and am happy with it.

  • 1. That is not correct. Im booting from 5th sata(odd) v3 and v4.

    2. This souds familiar, as i did with omv3. Grub was on usb stick and Os on odd.

Later they update it the app for usb stick image and was no reason for grub on a usb stick.

    3. This is an very very cool option.

Im strongly considering....for in the future.

I'll go again with clean install of v.5 if ftp update during install show no problems and in gui show no grafik errors(after cleaning web browser cash).

As last resort, i will try with clean install of v.4 and upgrade to v.5

  • Booting is not related to omv at all. Omv is only a software on top of debian.

Go for a debian buster install and add omv on top of it.

Not booting fron the odd was a limitation of the hp bios. If they removed it that is nice.

  • 1. That is not correct. Im booting from 5th sata(odd) v3 and v4.

As far as I know is only possible with hacked BIOS. https://n40l.fandom.com/wiki/Bios

    Sorry , is only true for Gen6 = N40L or N54L

  • Hello,

It seems all the time was my own bad luck.

By accident have reseted a bios. What resulted in many try and error results.

Once more for whom may help:

-Unable hardware raid card. And here choose AHCI login.

-Unable first NIC port(second is by default unenabled).

Than i tryed what Zoki have mention, an inner usb port install.

Without thinking that could go without a problem.

Have used extern enclouser usb v.2 with a hdd(the plan is to use ssd).

    No problem with anything.

So i have 5 sata ports on menu.

THanx Zoki, i do own u this one !!!

My deep appologys for helping unhelpfull.

    Cheers!

Ps. Clean Omv v.5.5.11 install from usb stick.
