Hello,
What is the upgrade experience like? Is there a simple script that will do it automatically or do I need to reinstall the software like I did for the first time with v5?
Thanks
Bart

Upgrade the system. Make a backup/clone of your OS drive. Then just run omv-release-upgrade
What do you mean by upgrade the system? Where and how do I get and run "omv-release-upgrade." I'm new to this game and I don't understand many of the terms.
Thanks
Bart

Go to the GUI of omv and search for updates and install them.

From CLI e.g by using Putty from Windows. You can read in the new user guide (linked in my signature) how to do it.
I understand that.
And I get most of your second response except for CLI e.g, what's that?
Thanks
Bart

In update manager then updates, I click on check and then get an error massage "failed to execute command. Why is that?

We need more of the message. I would also hit ctrl-shift-R just in case something in the web interface is not up to date.
Here is the error message:

I'm viewing the OMV server from my browser on a different PC. Do I need to run that line from the OMV server?
Yes. Or you connect to the server via Putty, cmd or powershell on windows.
Upgrade the system. Make a backup/clone of your OS drive. Then just run omv-release-upgrade
I go in through Putty and type the line omv-release-upgrade and nothing happens. I'm still in OMV 5. Why did it not change to OMV 6?
What is the output of omv-upgrade? You have to run the command as "root". Either log in via Putty as "root" or use sudo omv-upgrade in Putty. In that case you will be asked to enter your root password.
You can copy the output from Putty to the forum. Please use the </> button in the forum.
First off, I want to thank you all for spending so much time with me. I know how frustrating it can be.
I will try your latest suggestions.
Thanks

I was in Putty and ran the omv-upgrade line after root@HomeNAS:~# and got the return response "command not found"
Your path might not be set, try /usr/sbin/omv-upgrade
If omv-release-upgrade can not be found, you may have an old version from the time where no release upgrade was available, but omv-upgrade should be there.
Post a screenshot, so we can see you typos.
This is strange:
post the output of
ls -l /usr/sbin/omv*
dpkg -l | grep openm
