What do you want to achieve with this?
I just want an automatic automated backup of my SD Card so if it ever goes south, i can recover it easily.

I also
but I'm afraid it's not that easy, you will have to do it manually.

Not so easy. You need an image like you did with etcher as a basis. Then you copy the files which you rsynced back on the restore of that image.
For the rsync thing you can use the backup plugin. But make sure you know how to make a restore. Test it!!!!!!

Well that's disappointing
If you use the ddfull option in the backup plugin, it makes a copy of the full card (although live copy) and it can be scheduled (/us/sbin/omv-backup is the command to use).

What puts me off about this system is the restoration. It`s complicated. I have seen the explanation several times in the forum and I end up losing interest along the way. There is no clear guide on this anywhere.
Okay, starting to feel like a complete noob right about now
I have downloaded USBimager. I have the 16GB SD Card ready to clone/backup. Can i select it? No. I can select files using the 3 dots button, but according to the instructions
Creating Backup Image File from Device
So I do this and i can only select my 1TB Lacie External HDD, not the SD Card.
Please help, this surely can't be THAT difficult!

And I don't know how to make it any easier since the backup is stored on the device you want to restore. If the ddfull image file is copied to another device and you can use usbimager to write that file back to the boot device, it isn't hard.

Is the SD card mounted? Sorry, I have never used the mac version.

I tried long ago and gave up. I will try again with more enthusiasm.

It is, yes. Looking like i'm going to have to borrow my daughters Windows laptop..

It is just an image file of the device. Anything that can access that file and the disk should be able to write the image to the disk.

Please don't lol. You do not want the sd card mounted. That is why it isn't in the list.

Nope. Inserted SD Card. Unmounted SD Card using Disk Utility. Still not appearing in the list.

Okay. Status Update.
Grabbed Windows Laptop (Vile thing).
Installed USBImager.
Inserted SD Card.
Went from no drives in a list to 2! D: & E: Both the same name except 1 had "(boot)" after its name. Didn't know which one to pick so..
Opened disk management (Win + R then diskmgmt.msc) and unmounted SD Card (Remove drive letter).
Now only 1 in the list.
Selected the one remaining (no (boot) after its name.
Hit Read.
Managed to lose 64GB SD card.
Found 64GB SD Card (Grey Carpet).
Formatted 64GB SD card using SD Card Formatter.
Open disk Management again, Assign 64GB SD Card D:
Open USB Imager, select Image, select SD Card, Hit Write
I hope people are seeing now why and automated backup system is desired rather than having to do this manually For a noob like myself this is an amazing amount of work for what should be a relatively simple task. All i wanted to do was make a back up of my SD Card.
Now comes the moment of truth, insert 64GB card into OMV server and switch on, then, resize the partition.
Wish me luck

It would be easier if we could control the hardware OMV runs on. But since you can use a huge server or an rpi, the backup/restore methods for each are significantly different. Just for some perspective, how would you restore your mac?

I use Time machine. Plug in a drive, network or USB. Simple. Extremely user friendly. If my drive explodes, i can buy a new drive, plug it in, select "restore from time machine" and boom, up and running in minutes.
I honestly thought i would be able to plug in a USB Drive, mount it, play with a few settings in OMV, maybe install a plug-in, and be like, back up my SD Card to that USB Stick every night, and then forget about it, until my SD card died, then simply get a new SD Card, and restore it from the USB Stick.
64GB SD Card is now installed in the OMV server and running well. Just need to resize it now and i'll be done for the night I think Save the Static i.p address issue for tomorrow

That is precisely the question. Apple has defined hardware models, so you can easily configure a backup for your hardware.

As Chente says, Apple has software in the firmware that helps with that. Nothing that OMV runs on has that option. I've tried for years to come up with something that works on all systems but this is the best I have.
