Where is some os logs in Debian 12
It seems that some of the system log files (/var/log/syslog, /var/log/auth.log, /var/log/kern.log, ...) have been removed in the latest version of Debian,…

debian cancelled syslog and uses journald instead. Is there any way to reach journald in webgui?

Thank you for hints in advance!

OMV 6.5.0-3 | RPi 3 Mod.B | OS, Memory extension, docker on SSD each

  • In the diagnostic section you can get the the old syslog which is extracting the info from the journal.

I tried, but i failed. after upgrading from OMV6... just Error 502/504, no further informations.

Is it possible that extractions fails due to large journal?

OMV 6.5.0-3 | RPi 3 Mod.B | OS, Memory extension, docker on SSD each

Edited once, last by KlausR ().

  • journalctl --disk-usage

Archived and active journals take up 1.3G in the file system.

journalctl -e works without probs. So really seems to be a prob of failing extractation. But i got no clue how to solve it. Anyone?

  • It seems to be rather a stroke of luck to get an answer from the experts. Thank you for your help.

Perhaps it will be of interest to anyone else who has the same problem. I jumped in at the deep end and deleted most of the files in /var/log/journal/(dir with 32characters).

It was probably really the size. Syslog and messages under Diagnostics are working again.

why elements from syslog are disappering after ~8h? Where it can be set?

In the GUI? I assume it is due to a limitation of the browser (not a time limitation, but a limitation of number of lines). For me it goes back to April.

Did you check the syslog from the CLI?

You can also download the file in the GUI.

Or were the logs rotated? Or did you do a vacuum?

  • I use cockpit and previously (one week ago) I normally had full log available.

At this moment it looks like this is showing info only from last few hours, for instance logs from today morning, which were visible ~12pm, now disappeared

  • I use cockpit only for viewing logs and as a webbrower terminal, that's all.

I don't use it for managment of debian.

Cockpit was even installed by omv-extras plugin in past, that's from I know this tool :)

I believe the problem is somehow connected with the flash memory plugin and swap which I swiched off, but I'm too stuping to figure out by myself...

omv-extras hasn't installed it in years. It was meant to work with virtual machines.

Doubtful. Neither of those would cause logs to be rotated or delete old logs. If you reboot a lot, you might lose a few logs but not 8 hours.

Probably systemctl/journalctl. Could be any number of settings. vacuum based on time, size, etc.

Yes. That just means it is using the defaults.

There are other ways to set journalctl settings other than what is in that one file. I recommend using chatgpt to figure out why it is doing this. It would take me too much back and forth. And patience.
