New approach for Raspberry Pi OMV images

It is always a good idea to make a clone or backup of your SD card before major modifications or updates.
But usually it is safe to make an update. And you actually should do it for security and functional patches.

...and it can be considered a part of the normal initial installation process to update the installed version to the latest.

After a successful install, update everything! Then config shares and docker and so on. Then (if not already done) backup/clone the root fs. (Thumb drive or SD card.)

For example with Win32Diskimager on Windows or fsarchiver on Linux.

You don't need a screen to install or use OMV. OMV has a web interface where you can see if it works and configure it and so on.

Disconnect everything except the network cable when you try to install. Don't have a screen, USB drive, keyboard or mouse connected. Nothing but the network cable. It is possible that other stuff cause to much power use and the installation fails because of that.

Make sure that internet is working properly in your network, with DHCP, using the cable to the RPi, before you connect power to install.

If you can connect to the web interface, raspberrypi.local, then update.

Then shut down

Then connect USB drive and start again and configure storage and shares and so on.

If you have a normal setup you should after a while typically be able to access the web interface on this adress in the web browser:

raspberrypi.local

This is assuming the install worked OK and you have a working LAN with internet access and DHCP with dnsmasq.

If it doesn't work there are several possibilities:

The SD card is bad.
The install image is bad.
The network cable is bad.
You need to scan for the ip for the RPi or login to the router to find it.
The RPi is not connected to the internet during the installation.
The network does not have a working DHCP-server.
The RPi is bad.
The computer you use to connect to the RPi cannot reach the RPi.

You can test each of these possibilities to determine what is the problem. It is difficult to figure out remotely.

Switch cables, try different cards, examine checksums, ping google.com. Examine the settings in the router. Examine other computers in the network.

Yesterday I installed OMV on a rpi4. I inserted the newly flashed SD card. Plugged in the network cable. Plugged in the power. After around 5 minutes (I used a very fast SD card) I could access it using the raspberrypi.local adress and login on the web interface.

Then you may have a failed install.

But test it: Type in that IP in the web browser and press enter.

If it doesn't work, try something else. Switch cables, go to a friends house or use another sd card and so on. And reinstall.

It is what I did and it worked fine.

Make sure that you clone the SD card before you try. Then, if something goes wrong, you can easily recover by restoring the card as it was before.
