Won't boot afer install

  • I am trying to install 5.3.9 via the amd64 iso but after the installation when it reboots is says no boot disk or drive has failed (or something close to that) I have had OMV4 running on the same hardware in the past and I can install Lubuntu before and after and it works just fine. I also tried 5.3.4 and have the same error

    Any Ideas?

  • You need to say what media is being used as the source of the install and what media is being used as the target of the install.

A backup strategy is worthless unless you have a verified to work by testing restore strategy.

    OMV AMD64 7.x on headless Chenbro NR12000 1U Intel Xeon CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz 32GB ECC RAM.

  • I used Balena etcher to make the install usb, installing onto a kingston m.2 sata ssd 16Gig. The computer is a HP t620 plus thin client with an AMD quad core processor. 4Gig Ram

  • I just installed 4.1.3 just fine. Can I just upgrade to 5.x from there without trouble?

    Yes.

You can try to install and boot first time without data disks. If that works run update-grub. Then shutdown, connect the data disks and boot again.

I'm gonna start referring to this as an impatience error, rather than a boot/install error.

I only had the ssd that I was installing to connected. no data disks. I wanted to get it working before adding data disks.

I didn't have any other disks attached. I did a lot of trouble shooting for 6 or so hours. Trying multiple install usb drives, multiple other operating systems, clearing and resetting bios etc. before I even asked in here. I apologize if that was being too impatient.

I was just kidding. To me.. when you install a new os, the first thing you do is run all updates and upgrades... Then you start adding hardware, installing software, etc. That's just the way I've been for years.

That would have prevented this problem from ever appearing
