mergerfs - cannot create new pool

  • I've installed mergerfs but in the mergerfs section I cannot create a new pool. The create dialog has changed quite a bit, there's no way to choose a hard disk like in OMV5 instead there's a 'shared folder' setting. In the shared folder input field I cannot choose a hard drive or anything else. I want to create the pool first before continuing with a shared folder.

How do I create a new pool with my mounted hard disks?

    Approved the thread.
  • ok, that worked, thx.

The mergerfs interface is a little bit cumbersome in that regard as you have to paste the path of the mount points instead of a drop down menu with the drives, like in OMV5. This is not really intuitive and would need some polishing

Maybe this will improve over the time but since current status of this plugin is done my hopes are not too high.

And a super big thank you to ryecoaaron for donating his time completely free of charge to write, test and debug all of the extra plugins. Without his fantastic efforts none of this would be possible.

Just imagine what you'd have to do to receive feedback like this.

There are many ways of saying things, and I think yours has not been the most appropriate. Perhaps something like this would have been more correct:

"I suggest including a dropdown menu in mergerfs to select existing disks. Its use would be much more intuitive. Unfortunately, I don't have enough knowledge to help develop the code that would make this possible, so I am donating $ 1 as a small contribution, in sincere thanks for the personal time OMV developers put in so that we can enjoy this great software. for free."

Do you really think a plugin has never changed over time due to suggestions, etc? Aaron mentioned that all of the plugins required a significant rewrite for OMV 6. Some stuff had to change, I'm sure when time allows some may be updated, some may not

You're certainly welcome to put your considerable skills to work in helping make it better, I'm sure he'd appreciate it

You seem to be ignoring the multi-select dropdown for shared folders. This the OMV way of doing things. If you want the entire drive shared, just create a shared folder in the root of each drive. I did have to make some changes for OMV6 and systemd. And while not intuitive to you, I created the mergerfsfolders plugin because people did want to specify paths. You can't have a wildcard path when selecting drives. And wildcard paths let you expand your pool without changing anything. That alone is worth a little cut & paste time especially since the OMV 6 filesystem tab has an icon to copy the drive's path.

Did you mean to say: "I am using pre-release software and complain about functionality, I can not find"

I you followed the link I gave you and scrolled 2 posts down there is this statement:

"Yes. exactly like that. you can even select from the pull down menu."

I have not switched to OMV, but I belive what is written there.

If you got help in the forum and want to give something back to the project click here (omv) or here (scroll down) (plugins) and write up your solution for others.

I have added an additional dropdown to openmediavault-mergerfs 6.0.14 that allows selection of filesystems just like the OMV 5.x unionfilesystems plugin. So, now you can select filesystems, shared folders, and/or enter paths. The plugin will unique the list if you pick the extact same path in more than one of those.

That has to be a typo. Maybe “I haven’t switched to OMV6 yet.”

Somewhere I read that Volker was preparing OMW 0.1 (OpenMediaWindows) Or have I dreamed it...?

Maybe this will improve over the time but since current status of this plugin is done my hopes are not too high.

The plugin status being marked done just means it is ported from OMV 5 to 6. This does not mean the plugin will never change. The mergerfs plugin has gone through many iterations since it was marked done already.

  • Ok, first of all I didn't mean to come off rude here. I do know that Aaron et al are working in their spare time for this project, so sorry for my initial "rant" start.

I did notice the dropdown menu but there was no entry available when I clicked on it, zero entries although the drives are formatted and mounted. I've compared the setup on OMV5 since the GUI has changed a little bit on OMV6.

So I copied the mount points and pasted the info and it worked, don't know why the dropdown was empty. I would expect to see my drives in there to create the pool.

Before mergerfs 6.0.14, there was only a shared folder dropdown. So, if you did not create any shared folders, then there would be nothing in the dropdown. With 6.0.14, there is a second dropdown that would show formatted, mounted drives.

I've compared the setup on OMV5 since the GUI has changed a little bit on OMV6.

A little bit? It changed a lot. And you weren't even using the same plugin (OMV 5 was unionfilesystems or mergerfsfolders and OMV 6 is using a brand new mergerfs plugin). And since OMV 6 isn't released, I was working on improving the plugin because I believe in continuous improvement.
