omv-extras plugins - porting progress to OMV 6.x

  • Maybe I have a small problem.

Today I updated OMV 5 to OMV 6. Also I installed omv-extras (6). Now I get an error. If I go in omv6 on the side "omv-extras".

I don`t know why it happens.

  • This sounds like rebooting in windows

True but client side cache is the one thing we can't fix from code on the server side.

  • I haven't done it yet, I'm still on OMV5 so I'm not sure. If I have understood correctly, the process should be: install the ZFS plugin, install the sharerootfs plugin, import the ZFS group (in CLI) to a folder in /.

Then you must create a shared folder, in "Access permissions" "Shared folders", press "+ Add", select the device where OMV is (in my case /dev/sdg1, or whatever it is in yours) In the path box, click on the icon and display the list of folders in /, find the folder corresponding to your ZFS group and select it., create the shared folder. Then you can share it on samba or NFS.

    Did you do all this?

Thank for this. What I did was, (coming from Truenas with data) zpool import -f <poolname>. Is this what you meant by import the ZFS group to a folder in / ?

When I did this, even though the sharerootfs plugin was installed, I still could not see the datasets when trying to create a sharedfolder.

    Yes.

The share rootfs plugin helps you create an existing shared folder in /. Therefore, what you should do is what I said before. Create a shared folder pointing to your pool / <poolname> and then share it.

I think it will not appear in the filesystem until the plugin is fully ported, it is missing the frontend. This should confirm ryecoaaron

  • I shall just wait on the complete plugin.

You might be waiting a long time. The zfs plugin web interface needs a complete rethinking and rewrite since it was using custom components that aren't possible in omv 6.x.

On another host I am current testing TrueNAS Scale. Although I am used to docker-compose and find it faster to deploy my apps compared to Helm in Scale

  • openmediavault-flashmemory - done

Does the new flashmemory plugin not have a UI component to it at this time? I am running version 6.0.1 of the plugin on my server, but I don't see any menu entry for it.

    openmediavault-wol - not started

How much work will the WOL plugin require to port? Is it just a UI port? I am asking because I use it on my server, and if you don't have plans to get to it any time soon, I might try taking a stab at porting it if time permits.

Correct. There is no page with instructions on it. There is a status indicator in the services status tab now though.

It is a pretty easy port. The mergerfs and kvm plugins have been taking most of my time. If you want to give it a shot, I won't tell you no :) Otherwise, I can probably take a productive break from mergerfs.

  • I'm looking forward to the plugin openmediavault-mergerfs. Best wishes every thing goes well.

Me too. I just want to be done with it. The switch to systemd mount is proving to be a huge change. I haven't even got to the migration scripts that will be automatically move the unionfilesystems and mergerfsfolders plugins to the new one.

  • Hi just wanted to hear if you was aware that the kernel plugin does not seem to update the grub correctly when installing proxmox kernel.

When pressing the button it installs the kernel coretctly but it does not seem to be adding it to the grub menu. So when you make the reboot as it says you should the it does makes a normal reboot. It does not boot in to the now installed proxmox kernel.

How do I update the grub bootloader so it sees the kernels corectly as it did in OMV5 when you installed proxmox kernel?

  • Correct. There is no page with instructions on it. There is a status indicator in the services status tab now though.

Ah, I had not noticed the status indicator. Thanks for pointing that out! Are there any plans to restore the page with instructions? I don't need it, but I am curious.

Time permitting, I would not mind trying to take a crack at it over the weekend. Although if I am being honest, I have struggled with the most basic of plugin tasks in the past, so I am sure it would not be easy for me. 😆

  • Are there any plans to restore the page with instructions?

Definitely not. It caused too many problems because people read the instructions as mandatory even though labeled as optional.

I just glanced at the code. I could probably port in 15-30 mins. If you really want to do it, I can leave it. Otherwise, it isn't really the time killer some of the others are.

  • Mind you, this is Ubuntu kernel, so they will backport everything that is needed to be up-to-date. RHEL and Centos have much much older kernels that are backported, so that you have maybe 3.10-1000 or more updates.

    This is perfectly okay.

Proxmox update bumped the kernel to 5.15 today. Typo I meant 5.13.

    FYI

If you make it idiot proof, somebody will build a better idiot.
